Which solar installer equipment brands hold up in 2027

Solar installer equipment brands are not ranked here. Instead: fifteen datasheet and distributor checks that let you rank them yourself, for your own roofs.

What to take away

  • No brands are named on this page. A ranking of panel, inverter, or racking makers written by someone who has never installed on your roofs, in your climate, under your inspector, is worth nothing to you.

Why there is no list

Naming a set of manufacturers and attaching commentary to them would mean making claims about identifiable companies that nobody here has tested. It would also be useless, because the answer changes with your roof types, your climate, your utility's equipment requirements, and what your distributor can actually deliver this quarter.

There is a real question underneath the search, though, and it is answerable: how do I tell a good product line from a bad one before I have installed a hundred of them? That is what follows.

The fifteen checks

On the datasheet

  1. Are the ratings stated at conditions you can compare? Two products quoted at different test conditions are not comparable until you convert them. If the datasheet is vague about conditions, that is itself a finding.
  2. What is the temperature behavior? Output falls as cells heat. A product that looks marginally better on a cool test bench can look different on a dark roof in August.
  3. What are the mechanical load ratings, and in which mounting configuration? Ratings are conditional on how the product is clamped. A rating that assumes a mounting method you do not use does not apply to your installation.
  4. What certifications and listings are stated? Note them, then check that the certification is current with the body that issued it rather than trusting a logo on a PDF.
  5. What does the fine print say about the conditions the warranty assumes? Cleaning intervals, permitted mounting methods, and environmental limits all appear here, and all of them are things your crew can accidentally void.

On the warranty documents

  1. How many separate warranties are there, and who holds each one? Product defect, performance, and workmanship are usually three separate promises from up to three parties.
  2. Who pays for labor on a warranty replacement? This is the question that decides whether a warranty claim costs you money. The answer is frequently that it does.
  3. How is a claim filed, and by whom? Some processes require the installer, some the homeowner, some a registered account with the manufacturer. Find out before you need it, not after.
  4. What is the process if the manufacturer stops trading? There is often no answer, which is a reason to keep a mix rather than to standardize entirely on one supplier.
  5. Is registration required within a time limit? If yes, that becomes a step in your commissioning process, and a forgotten step is a voided warranty.

With the distributor and the inspector

  1. What is the real lead time, and what is the substitution policy? A product you cannot get is not a product. Ask what happens when the ordered item is unavailable and something similar is shipped instead.
  2. Is there a technical support line staffed by people who install? You will need it during a commissioning problem with a homeowner watching.
  3. Has the local electrical inspector seen this product before? An unfamiliar product means a slower inspection and more questions. Ask the inspector, not the sales representative.
  4. Does the utility's interconnection standard have anything to say about it? Some utilities require particular equipment behavior or settings. The utility's own interconnection standard is the authority, and it is worth reading before you commit to a line.
  5. What does the compatibility documentation actually say? Racking, module, and electronics compatibility is documented by the manufacturers. An assembly that works because it fits is not an assembly that is approved to work.

Turning the answers into a standard

Write the answers into a one-page sheet per product line and keep it with your purchasing records. When someone asks why you install what you install, that sheet is the answer, and it is a far stronger sales asset than a brand name.

The safety products are a different decision

Where the local rules enter

The Department of Energy's solar permitting guidebook explains why documented system information matters to the review and inspection process: the plan set and the equipment documentation are what the reviewer works from. Your jurisdiction's adopted codes and its own submittal list control the detail, so the products you standardize on should be ones whose documentation you can produce quickly.

Common questions

Should I standardize on one manufacturer for everything?

No. Standardize enough to keep the crew fast and the inventory small, but keep an alternative you have actually installed, so a supply problem or a failed manufacturer does not stop you.

Is a longer warranty a better product?

Not on its own. A long warranty from a company with no labor coverage and a hostile claim process can cost you more than a shorter one with a clear path. Check 6 through 10 before check 5.

How do I answer a customer who asks which brand is best?

Tell them what you install, why you chose it using the checks above, and what the warranty actually covers including who pays for labor. That is a better answer than a superlative, and it is one you can support.

Can I trust a comparison published by a distributor?

Treat it as a starting point and verify the warranty and supply answers yourself. A distributor's comparison is a sales document, whatever else it is.
